Way back in 2005, when Sarah Kramer’s La Dolce Vegan! came out I was a little dubious about the Joint Cheese Burger Pizza, the idea of pickles and mustard as pizza toppings struck me as just wrong. After a bit of encouragement I tried it and loved it. At the time my cheeses of choice for the pie were Follow Your Heart’s Vegan Gourmet Cheddar or Jack . This weekend I tried it with the Daiya cheddar style and it was amazing. My only major tweaks were adding jalapeno rings as well as pickles and using tempeh sausage crumbles from Vegan With a Vengence for the burger.
This was our first time using the cheddar style Daiya and it did not disappoint, it fulfilled all my expectations of shredded cheddar from my pre-vegan days. It had the flavor of a mild cheddar, and melted nearly as well as the mozzarella style did, and it also tasted great before the cooking.
