The Kitties Need You! May 26, 2010

I usually don’t post anything about my Etsy shop here on the food blog, but since it’s for an important cause I have to share 🙂 I’ve you haven’t heard yet, on May 20 there was a horrible fire at the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society that completely destroyed their cat shelter area, laundry area, offices and has left them without water, electricity, or phone service. 15 precious kitties were also lost in the fire. What they need now more than anything is money to get them back on their feet.  I thought the best way I could help would be to donate sales from select items from my Etsy shop. I’ve already been able to donate $24 from the sales of a Hedgehog Meadows bag to another great seller Oh Danger and nifty Robot Pin to another awesome person. I’ll be donating 100% of the sales of the following items in my shop:

Cheese Burger Pizza!!! May 3, 2010

Way back in 2005,  when  Sarah Kramer’s La Dolce Vegan! came out I was a little dubious about the Joint Cheese Burger Pizza, the idea of pickles and mustard as pizza toppings struck me as just wrong.  After a bit of encouragement I tried it and loved it.  At the time my cheeses of choice for  the pie were Follow Your Heart’s Vegan Gourmet  Cheddar or Jack .  This weekend I tried it with the Daiya cheddar style and it was amazing.  My only major tweaks were adding jalapeno rings as well as pickles and using tempeh sausage crumbles from Vegan With a Vengence for the burger.

This was our first time using the cheddar style Daiya and it did not disappoint, it fulfilled all my expectations of shredded cheddar from my pre-vegan days.  It had the flavor of a mild cheddar, and melted nearly as well as the mozzarella style did, and it also tasted great before the cooking.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Ice Cream May 2, 2010

Simply delicious:

This is the peanut butter and jelly ice cream from The Vegan Scoop and it’s crazy awesome!  This is the third recipe we’ve tried from this book an it’s by the far the best.  And it was really easy to make, you don’t have to mess with any sort of thickener because of how much peanut butter is in the recipe.  We used chunky strawberry preserves for the jelly and I can see how chocolate would also make a great mix in, mmmm peanut butter and chocolate!  So if you have this book, you need to make this ice cream!  Unless you’re allergic to peanuts, then not so much 🙂
