Spicy tofu and green bean stir-fry… July 29, 2008

Filed under: Food Talk — veganshane @ 1:29 pm

Kala hates green beans! Last nights’ dinner was a green bean experiment in hopes of changing Kala’s mind.For years I have been doing saucy stir-fries featuring tofu and green beans, and usually spicy.  The dish featured fairly common Chinese flavors, soy and hoisin sauce, onion, ginger, garlic, and toasted sesame oil.  Lets not forget hot chilies. On the whole I thought it tasted good, although the sauce was not quite right, just a little out of balance. In the  end I thought I could infect Kala with green bean love, but alas it was not to be. Kala still hates green!

Peanut Butter + Chocolate = Drool July 25, 2008

Last night I really needed something sweet so I decided to go pretty decadent and make peanut butter and chocolate sandwich cookies.  Of course it was way to hot for a sensible person to be running the oven, but I’ve never been accused of being sensible.  The peanut butter cookie recipe is an old favorite from Soy, Not Oi! and the chocolate frosting comes out of a can.  But if you wanted to make your own frosting, Isa has a really yummy recipe in Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World.  And are the cookies good?  Well, I haven’t had breakfast yet, but I still couldn’t resist taking a bite after the photos were taken:

Vacation = Pizza! July 12, 2008

Filed under: Food Talk — Kala @ 6:06 pm

This past week or so, Shane and I were up at my parents’ place on a mini vacation.  And what’s a vacation without pizza?  Of course we had other stuff too (sushi, sesame noodles, nachos…) but the pizza was photographed mostly because you have to let it cool for a few minutes before you can cut it.  The pizza pictured above is a classic one around here, red bell peppers, mushrooms, Tofutti Mozz, homemade sauce, and Gimme Lean sausage balls.

The other pizza we made was a bit of an experiment:

It’s a nacho pizza with spiced black beans and onions, olives, green onions, cilantro, a spicy sauce, and a mixture of 2 soy cheeses.  Very yummy, especially with sliced avocado on top.

Stir-Fried Vegetarian “Duck” with Chili, Bell Pepper and Black Beans July 1, 2008

As I said  in my previous post Sunday was my birthday, one of the gifts Kala gave me was the book Authentic Chinese Cuisine: for the Contemporary Kitchen By Bryanna Clark Grogan. The first recipe we made from it was Stir-Fried Vegetarian “Duck” with Chili, Bell Pepper, and Black Beans.  It called for the old stand by a can of mock duck and we tweaked it a little bit adding a little more chili, maybe next time a bit more than we did on the first run through, and substituted yellow bell for the red bell.  It was a very tasty dish and very very easy. We had it with black jasmine rice.

Birthday Candy!!! Fairhaven Candy Crumblz

Filed under: Reviews — veganshane @ 12:25 pm

Sunday was my birthday, and one of my gifts was a bag of Fairhaven Candy Crumblz, the chocolate peanut butter to be specific. Kala ordered them from Food Fight Grocery, they are amazing.  They taste like the innards of a Butterfinger on steroids. They are in smaller chunks of course, but it had a perfect blend of peanut butter  crunch and a hint of chocolate. Its a blend of crunch and melt that will make your eyes roll back! They could be a seriously addictive snack if they were easily available in the Twin Cities.
