Birthday Eats! June 30, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — veganshane @ 10:17 am

Yesterday was my birthday and Kala and I opted for dinner at the Triple Rock Social Club. The place is a bar owned and.operated by members of the band Dillinger Four. The place  serves up a lot of vegan friendly bar/comfort food, as well as having local and national bands play. Kala and I both opted for variations on the po’ boy sandwich. Mine was the Minneapolis po’boy, a mound of Gimme Lean and potatoes covered in vegan nacho sauce and Nayonaise. All this on a small bun, this is not a pick it up and eat it sammie. Kala had the BBQ-ed po’boy that was a smilar sized mound of mock duck and potatoes covered in a rich and spicy bbq sauce. Both were very tasty and very filling!

The Kitties Need You! May 26, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kala @ 5:32 pm

I usually don’t post anything about my Etsy shop here on the food blog, but since it’s for an important cause I have to share :) I’ve you haven’t heard yet, on May 20 there was a horrible fire at the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society that completely destroyed their cat shelter area, laundry area, offices and has left them without water, electricity, or phone service. 15 precious kitties were also lost in the fire. What they need now more than anything is money to get them back on their feet.  I thought the best way I could help would be to donate sales from select items from my Etsy shop. I’ve already been able to donate $24 from the sales of a Hedgehog Meadows bag to another great seller Oh Danger and nifty Robot Pin to another awesome person. I’ll be donating 100% of the sales of the following items in my shop:

Queen Bee Project/Gift Bag

Sleepy Hedgehog Pin:

Garden Delights Project/Gift Bag:

Abstract Botany Pin Set:

Mod Monkey Project Bag:

Peanut Butter and Jelly Ice Cream May 2, 2010

Simply delicious:

This is the peanut butter and jelly ice cream from The Vegan Scoop and it’s crazy awesome!  This is the third recipe we’ve tried from this book an it’s by the far the best.  And it was really easy to make, you don’t have to mess with any sort of thickener because of how much peanut butter is in the recipe.  We used chunky strawberry preserves for the jelly and I can see how chocolate would also make a great mix in, mmmm peanut butter and chocolate!  So if you have this book, you need to make this ice cream!  Unless you’re allergic to peanuts, then not so much :)

In the zone…the calzone April 24, 2010

While this may be the second post featuring Daiya cheese, these wonderful calzones were our first test of the mozzarella.  Put simply ,they were awesome, so good we have in fact made them twice.  The process was simple, we used the pizza crust recipe from Sara Kramer’s book La Dolce Vegan! we cut the finished dough into four equal portions and rolled each out onto a floured surface until it was fairly thin, added some chunky tomato sauce, mushrooms, some Yves vegan pepperoni and a generous hand full of the Daiya.  We sealed it up, cut a few vent holes, and baked it at 450 degrees F for 15 to 20 minutes.  Showing off the best of Daiya’s qualities, the calzones were tasty, gooey and stretchy!  Oh, and they are even good cold.

What are you waiting for?  Go get some Daiya and play!

Mmmmmm cookies!!! February 20, 2010

Kala and I were out and about today( we picked up a deepdish pizza pan and coffee extract at Sur La Table, I am sure  it will be featured in a future post).  Since  some caffeine was needed stopped for some evil corporate coffee at Starbucks, we also were able to sample a new vegan and glutenfree brand of cookies: Dr. Lucy’s. We tried the chocolate chip variety.  The cookies are small a good snack size and very crunchy, good for dunking in some soymilk or coffee.  They have a flavor and texture very similar to the Bob’s Red Mill gluten free cookies of a few posts ago.  On the whole they provided the crunch snack I was looking for. I would like to try some of the other varieties at some point in the future.
